Cannot publish repository - could not read username

See original GitHub issue

Hello,

I just started using Github today. As I’m trying to follow a guide, I realize I am unable to publish a repository. It prompts an error that says

error: cannot spawn C:\Users\donal\AppData\Local\GitHubDesktop\app-2.5.3\resources\app\static\ask-pass-trampoline.bat: No error fatal: could not read Username for ‘https://github.com’: terminal prompts disabled

I looked through the support link on trampoline.bat and followed the steps, but it still doesn’t work. 1.) I don’t have an autorun file. 2.) I turned off the antivirus 3.) I ran as admin 4.) it doesn’t seem like I have special characters in my username (unless it refers to my email then I guess there’s an “@”) 5.) I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled and it’s still bugged.

@goofycomp thanks for the report. Just to confirm, did you check both HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor\ for autorun entries? Could you try creating a new user account on this machine to see if you are able to perform Git operations successfully there?

Thanks for the report @alexjfy. Please refer to our help document for steps about how to resolve this issue on your machine. One of the more common causes has been the modified Registry entries. Let me know if you have any questions about the steps.
