Maximized window stuck; has no evident way to unmaximize

See original GitHub issue

Description

I’m trying GHD – and maximized the window – then could not at all get out.

Version

  • GitHub Desktop: 1.5.0 – had just updated
  • Operating system: Windows 10 1809

Steps to Reproduce

    • window certainly maximizes when you hit the maximize box
    • but then no normal Windows icons remain for hide, unmaximize, or even close
    • no menu item either, as apps usually have for this
    • Windows-key plus down-arrow doesn’t unmaximize as expected – rather, it hides
    • Windows-key plus up-arrow brings the maximized window back
    • closing GHD from the taskbar works, but opening it again remembers the unchangeable maximized state,
    • finally I got to trying F11, which finally unmaximized to prior state

Expected Behavior

By any of the means mentioned – and particularly by an unmaxmize icon which should be there but isn’t – the GHD window should unmaximize

Actual Behavior

Come on. It locked on full screen.

You might not have read the problem statement completely.

I just replicated the problem. The key is that you engaged Full Screen view first. When you do that:

  • you can’t reach the View menu, to have an item to leave full screen
  • you have no indication anywhere that F11 is able to leave full screen
  • Escape key doesn’t leave full screen, which is a standard way to leave full screen, across many apps
  • the Windows-arrow keys operate only as far as show/hide the window, not any of the other options which would achieve a non-full-screen presentation.

Result: you’re trapped, unless you hint yourself F11. I would remind that Function Keys, while once a big thing for PC users, are these days often hidden behind extra option keys, etc. – hardly a front-and-center means of control.

@narration-sd Thanks for clarifying. I believe we are taking about the Toggle Fullscreen menu item, aka F11.

Yes, the user appears to be trapped unless using F11 again.

cc @desktop/design for thoughts as this is not an ideal experience.
