Unable to override Identity UI pages after upgrading to .Net 6 preview 4

See original GitHub issue

Describe the bug

After upgrading my .Net 5.0.7 project to .Net 6 beta 4 for testing, my overridden Identity UI pages, still located at /Areas/Identity/Pages/Account, are being ignored.

Creating a new web project and overriding the defaults using the standard Add New Scaffolded Item… does in fact create overridden pages that are respected, and places them in the exact same location as previous versions of .Net.

Deleting my login.aspx and creating it again through the UI (Add New Scaffolded Item…) generates all of the same files, includes, etc. as doing it in a new project, but the scaffolded login.cshtml is still ignored in an existing project.

My Identity UI overrides have come along through every framework update/upgrade starting with .Net Core 3 and up. Simply using SCC to roll back the .Net 6 preview 4 changes is enough to get my overridden Identity UI pages back.

Exceptions (if any)

No exceptions.

Runtimes certainly should, but as you have older SDKs they may be carried with that, and thus they’re not getting uninstalled. I’d suggest having a manual cleanup of SDKs via add/remove programs, and also removing 2.2 entirely as that’s not supported. Then let Microsoft Update or VS take care of putting new SDKs down. If you have multiple VS installs that may explain the 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 sdks being present.

Glad you figured it out

@HaoK Any chance that the cause of this will be identified and fixed in .Net 6? The unclosed <link ...> did not cause overridden Identity UI pages to be ignored from .Net 5.0.7 back to .Net Core 3.0.

Because this is so difficult to track down without an error or indication of problem, it has the potential to be a real hair-puller for others.
