Can not make a net472 project properly reference a netstandard package with multiple runtimes

See original GitHub issue

Steps to reproduce

  • use Windows
  • create a new-style .NET SDK project (can copy-paste from below)
  • set target to net472 (or any net47x, maybe even 46x will do)
  • add package reference to Python.Runtime.UnofficialNetStandard, version 2.4.0-a6
  • in the code, access something from Python.Runtime namespace
  • try building, running, publising

Expected behavior

  • build and publish make a copy of Python.Runtime.dll in the output directory
  • run succeeds

Actual behavior

  • neither build, nor publish copy either of Python.Runtime.dll to the output
  • run fails with FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Python.Runtime, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

NuGet package structure

 |- Python.Runtime.dll
runtimes
|- win
 |- lib
  |- netstandard2.0
   |- Python.Runtime.dll
|- unix

I also control the package, so if the problem is in the package itself, I’d like a guidance on how to make it the proper way.

Same question/problem on StackOverflow

Linking @onovotny, for he is the author of SDK Extras, which I used to create the package.

The problem only appears with net4xx family of targets. netcoreapp2.0, for example, works without the problem.

Sample project file

<Project Sdk="Microsoft.NET.Sdk">

  <PropertyGroup>
    <OutputType>Exe</OutputType>
    <TargetFramework>net472</TargetFramework>
    <LangVersion>latest</LangVersion>
  </PropertyGroup>

  <ItemGroup>
    <PackageReference Include="Python.Runtime.UnofficialNetStandard" Version="2.4.0-a6" />
  </ItemGroup>

</Project>

Seems like there is no action here for the CLI, so I am going to close this issue.

Thanks @onovotny for the help here.

You need to specify a <RuntimeIdentifier> property in order for RID-specific assets to be picked up.
