dotnet build fails with stack overflow in .Net Core 3.0 Preview 7

See original GitHub issue

This problem occurs only with Preview 7 (exact version see below). With sdk version 3.0.100-preview6-012264 everything works as expected.

Steps to reproduce

Have a big solution (90 projects) with a couple of postbuild copy-steps in some projects (e.g. copy 80 files from A to B).

Commands used: dotnet restore <Solution> dotnet build <Solution> --no-restore

Expected behavior

dotnet build runs successful without errors

Actual behavior

dotnet build fails with commandline output:

  • Stack Overflow or

  • MSBUILD : error MSB4166: Child node “7” exited prematurely. Shutting down. Diagnostic information may be found in files in "C:\Users\s.ossendorf\AppData\Local\Temp" and will be named MSBuild_*.failure.txt. This location can be changed by setting the MSBUILDDEBUGPATH environment variable to a different directory.

Content of one of those diagnostics is:

24.07.2019 11:38:52
System.IO.IOException: Pipe is broken.
   at System.IO.Pipes.PipeStream.CheckWriteOperations()
   at System.IO.Pipes.PipeStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count)
at Microsoft.Build.BackEnd.NodeEndpointOutOfProcBase.RunReadLoop(Stream localReadPipe, Stream localWritePipe, ConcurrentQueue`1 localPacketQueue, AutoResetEvent localPacketAvailable, AutoResetEvent localTerminatePacketPump)

The only difference in the files is the process number.

I’m reporting this issue to the msbuild repo, which seems more relatable:

Thanks @hillin. I agree, this belongs on the MSBuild repo. Closing this issue for now.
