Building vanilla project bootstrapped with `react-native init` fails with glog install error when building with `run-ios` on MacOS Mojave

See original GitHub issue

Manually running pod install in ios folder of a react-native project bootstrapped with react-native init results in the following error.

This is done because the builder recommends a manual pod-install after failing to do so automatically whilst attempting to build the application.

Steps To Reproduce

  1. react-native init test
  2. cd test && react-native run-ios

This recommends manual pod install as it fails, running this

  1. cd ios && pod install

results in the same error, which is pasted above

## Describe what you expected to happen:

I expected the vanilla application to build and launch in the simulator.

Today I started with react-native and ran into a similar problem of react-native run-ios producing a non fixable error:

info Installing “DerivedData/Build/Products/Debug-iphonesimulator/BRFv5ReactNative.app” An error was encountered processing the command (domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain, code=2): Failed to install the requested application An application bundle was not found at the provided path. Provide a valid path to the desired application bundle. Print: Entry, “:CFBundleIdentifier”, Does Not Exist error Command failed: /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print:CFBundleIdentifier DerivedData/Build/Products/Debug-iphonesimulator/BRFv5ReactNative.app/Info.plist Print: Entry, “:CFBundleIdentifier”, Does Not Exist . Run CLI with --verbose flag for more details. Error: Command failed: /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print:CFBundleIdentifier DerivedData/Build/Products/Debug-iphonesimulator/BRFv5ReactNative.app/Info.plist Print: Entry, “:CFBundleIdentifier”, Does Not Exist

My fix for it was:

react-native init TestProject cd TestProject/ios && pod install cd …

Open TestProject/ios/Pods/Pods.xcodeproj

New Scheme > Pods-TestProject > Compile for a Generic iOS Device + Compile for eg. iPhone X Simulator New Scheme > Pods-TestProjectTests > Compile for a Generic iOS Device + Compile for eg. iPhone X Simulator

Close Pods.xcodeproj

Open TestProject/ios/TestProject.xcodeproj

Optional: Set bundle identifier: com.yourcompany.testproject Setup Code Signing for TestProject Setup Code Signing for TestProjectTest

Compile TestProject for an attached iOS device

This will launch a metro bundler terminal window. If it doesn’t, check if port 8081 is in use in Terminal and kill the process: lsof -n -i4TCP:8081 kill -9 PID

Compile will fail anyway, because the libraries (Pods) can’t be found/linked, because of a /bin/ vs /build/ mismatch.

Select the project for the settings. Select the target TestProject. Select All + Combined in Build Settings. Search for PODS_BUILD_DIR Change the value to ${BUILD_DIR}/…/build which overwrites the bin/ somehow.

Add those paths, and keep build/ instead of $(BUILD_DIR): Add in TestProject > Library Search Paths: build/$(CONFIGURATION)$(EFFECTIVE_PLATFORM_NAME) Add in TestProjectTest > Library Search Paths: build/$(CONFIGURATION)$(EFFECTIVE_PLATFORM_NAME)

For a later release, add all the release versions of pods and paths.

Now Compile again: TestProject for an attached iOS device or simulator.

This time the app will launch on the phone/simulator.

react-native run-ios won’t work, but starting form XCode works for me now.
