I was right (Sort of). Running

$ SDKROOT=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.11.sdk/
$ SDK_DIR=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.11.sdk/

before npm install fixed it.

I think that what’s happening is whatever SDK one’s installed in XCode last takes precedence, and is causing node to try to compile binary modules against the iOS libraries, when it really shouldn’t be.

@jdk89757 I’m not sure it can be fixed, at least not by the react native team.

The right way for this to be fixed would be for Apple to realize that iThings aren’t the be-all and end-all of existence, and make it easy to switch between the macOS and iOS build tools, but… that’s never going to happen 😉

Barring that, you can work around the issue by running the two commands I put in my comment above before running ANY npm operation. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you could even write a shell script to wrap npm that runs those for you.

I’m hesitant to escalate this to the node-gyp team, because honestly I’m not totally confident those libraries will be in the same place for everyone’s MacOS installation, and I don’t really think it’s node-gyp’s job to detect that.
