Translating docs to Spanish

See original GitHub issue

I have been (sporadically) working on translating the documentation into Spanish and I found some decisions that I’d like the community to take part of before moving forward.

Gender Neutrality

In Spanish, they/their/them is not gender neutral which is suggested to use in the TLJH-docs (“Writing Documentation/Writing Style”). We use los/las. A common thing to do nowadays is to use X instead of a or o, for example, lxs invitadxs for the guests. Another less common practice is to use e instead of a, o, or x like les invitades for the guests. This is an arbitrary decision and either way is fine, in my opinion, but I’d like the community to set up some rules for the Spanish docs, just like the rules for the English docs, when it comes to inclusiveness.

Technical terms

There are a lot of different forms of Spanish and I, being from the north México 🇲🇽, have a different way of saying things sometimes. I don’t have a problem with a little bit of spanglish but that may not be the case for others. Furthermore, Mexican spanish sometimes can differ a lot from South American spanish, Central American spanish, or spanish from Spain. So I’d like the community input in some terms like:

  1. root access - acceso raíz? I’ve seen accesso root as well online.
  2. command line - línea de comando / terminal ?
  3. jupyter notebook - I don’t think we should translate notebook because it’s specifically regarding this new thing Jupyter made but if people think cuadernos Jupyter makes more sense I don’t see an issue there either.
  4. kernel - núcleo ? I’ve seen it as kérnel as well online.
  5. library (as a python package) - I’ve seen both librerías and paquetes
  6. hub - When referring to JupyterHub sometimes the docs just say your hub, what should we call this? centro de actividad? (google translation - I haven’t used hub in conversation before this).

Organization

Where do these doc files go in the docs/ directory?

I would love to have the community’s input in this and hear any experiences they’ve had translating technical materials. I believe most of us working/using python/jupyter would understand the terminology even if it’s a little odd (i.e. I don’t use librerías but I’d understand they meant library) but for the sake of the newcomers I think we should think hard about these decisions early on and maybe come up with rules for translation into not only spanish but other languages as well.

He visto accesso root también.

Just a quick note that the Carpentries are in the process of translating their ecology lessons to Spanish, and have developed a very useful guide. Unless there’s a good reason to deviate from that, it looks like we could follow it (or contribute improvements, obviously).

@yuvipanda yes! I also saw these online the other day: https://jupyter-docker-stacks.readthedocs.io/en/latest/contributing/translations.html Jupyter Docker Stacks being translated using transifex.com?

I’ve put some time in my calendar the next couple of weeks to start the translation and have a PR soon-ish
