Problem description

  1. Expected behaviour:

I’m trying to insert an java.time.OffsetDateTime into a datetimeoffset column. This should create a new row in the table with the current datetime and the offset. A datetime2 field is not suitable for the needs of the application. As datetimeoffset is the MSSQL version of a zoned date, this should work intuitively.

  1. Actual behaviour:

An error is thrown by the JDBC driver.

  1. Any other details that can be helpful:

MSSQL doesn’t actually provide a real TIMESTAMP_WITH_TIMEZONE, so I would argue DATETIMEOFFSET should support OffsetDateTime implicitly. I realize that I would need to provide a microsoft.sql.DateTimeOffset explicitly, but that seems rather unnecessary. java.time.OffsetDateTime stores all the relevant information for DATETIMEOFFSET, so I’m not quite sure why it’s not supported. This is particularly odd because ResultSet.getObject does support OffsetDateTime just fine.

Obviously the JDBC driver is receiving the correct object type. It is saying TIMESTAMP_WITH_TIMEZONE isn’t right for the field. I just feel that TIMESTAMP_WITH_TIMEZONE (and by extension java.time.OffsetDateTime) actually is right for DATETIMEOFFSET in this context.

Added info: Simply using OffsetDateTime.toString() instead of the object itself works perfectly. Quite a confusing construct.
