I think that having a minimum width for input could fix both problems at once. The minimum width could be calculated by the characters of the inputted string or set to a fixed amount so the user can, at least, read a part of his searched string.

Computers are like air conditioners, they stop working properly if you open Windows.
A shorter but very acceptable way could be ‘Nessun risultato’ (no results). You can try it.
