Jupyterlab 3.0.1 unable to find server plugin version

Describe the bug I get the following message using Jupyterlab 3
Unable to find server plugin version, this should be impossible, open a GitHub issue if you cannot figure this issue out yourself.
import jupyterlab_code_formatter succeeds and jupyterlab_code_formatter.__version__ gives "1.4.1". Not sure what to try next.

I seem to be getting this error even after including
jupyter server extension enable jupyterlab_code_formatter. I’m installing this in a docker container and strangely I don’t get the error if I just run jupyter lab in the docker container. However, if I run it within a jupyterhub deployment (z2jh), I get the error message. Running jlab 3.0.3 and jhub 1.2.2. I can verify that the server and lab extensions are installed:
