RestTemplate PATCH calls Do Not Work

Using Java8u121 and the latest version of Spring Boot + Spring Cloud as of the moment of this report, the RestTemplate does not work when you attempt a PATCH call.

I suspect that this has been a long-standing issue as it appears to have been reported here 10 months ago as #1022, but closed without resolution. And also 23 months ago here on StackOverflow.

One work around is to use HttpClient instead of Spring’s internal impl. If anyone knows of any others please let me know.

My solution for patch with RestTemplate :

HttpHeaders headers = new HttpHeaders();
MediaType mediaType = new MediaType("application", "merge-patch+json");
headers.setContentType(mediaType);

HttpEntity<yourObejct> entity = new HttpEntity<>(yourObejct, headers);
HttpComponentsClientHttpRequestFactory requestFactory = new HttpComponentsClientHttpRequestFactory();
RestTemplate restTemplate = new RestTemplate(requestFactory);

restTemplate.exchange(uri, HttpMethod.PATCH, entity, Void.class);
