Spyder won't open after new installation

Problem Description

I uninstalled and re-installed Anaconda (used anaconda-clean to remove folders and manually removed a few others). After installing again, I launch the navigator without problem but then I click on Spyder, I get the blue progress bar at the bottom but nothing happens. The spyder.lock folder does appear. I have tried pretty much all suggested answers (spyder --reset, updating qt, re install everything) but no success so far. I also removed my python references to my PATH and also completely removed the PYTHONPATH env variable

What steps reproduce the problem?

1. have anaconda installed
2. use anaconda-clean to remove folders
3. use control panel to uninstall anaconda
4. install anaconda again
5. run anaconda navigator
6. click on spyder

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

The Spyder GUI should launch, instead the progress bar does appear on the navigator window and it reads ‘launching spyder’ but nothing happens

Thank you very much! And what should I do to remove the 3.7 env?

There’s no way to do it because it’s the base environment. But you have two options to sort this out:

1. Install Miniconda instead of Anaconda, and create a py36 env with it. That will avoid wasting resources with a Python 3.7 env you’re never going to use.
2. Install an older Anaconda version, one which comes with Python 3.6 instead of 3.7 by default.
