private and precense authentication issue - Client can not be authenticated, got HTTP status 419

Setup: laravel/framework: 5.5.* laravel-echo-server: 1.2.9

I am encountering issues when the user joins a presence or private channel. Public channels work fine but that is because they don’t need to authenticate.

My echo call is doing:


Echo.join('chat')
            .here((users) => {
                console.log(users);
            })
            .joining((user) => {
                console.log(user.name);
            })
            .leaving((user) => {
                console.log(user.name);
            });

In the BroadcastServiceProvider (which i have uncommented in app.php) I have the:

Broadcast::routes();

Broadcast::channel('App.User.{id}', function ($user, $id) {
    return $user;
});

When the laravel-echo-server tries to authenticate through the /broadcasting/auth route the following error is returned:

I had the same problem. The Echo Server was running on a subdomain, so not the same server as the web server. Problem is, Echo uses Cookies to authenticate, and cookies are domain specific. Solution is: Add SESSION_DOMAIN to your .env file. Set the value to .example.com to allow all subdomains of example.com to access the cookies.
