Does not honor x-www-browser

I have firefox and chromium installed and I want riot-web to open links in firefox as it is my default browser. x-www-browser reflects that.
Steps to reproduce
- Click on a link
- Riot-web opens the link using chromium
I expect a link to be opened in the browser that x-www-browser points to:
$ update-alternatives --display x-www-browser
x-www-browser - auto mode
link best version is /usr/bin/firefox
link currently points to /usr/bin/firefox
link x-www-browser is /usr/bin/x-www-browser
slave x-www-browser.1.gz is /usr/share/man/man1/x-www-browser.1.gz
/usr/bin/chromium - priority 40
/usr/bin/firefox - priority 70
slave x-www-browser.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/firefox.1.gz
