Optional `metadata` field
See original GitHub issueAn optional metadata field at the top level of Vega and Vega-Lite specs can be used to add additional information to a spec that is ignored by the compiler. this metadata could be used by some custom preprocessing step.

FYI, I’ve pushed a commit to vega-parser master that updates the schema to allow a
usermetaobject at the top-level of the spec. This will be included in the next Vega release. Though I’m sure we could debate terminology further, hopefully this proves useful regardless 😃sure, can give it a try, but I am pretty bad at JS. https://github.com/vega/vega-lite/issues/3610
