The obvious choices I see are

the element web main tl paradigm: read markers have their own column on the right side. it might be smaller (condensed to the width of ~2 avatar circles. This reserves a lot of horizontal space you don’t have in this configuration to start with.
the element mobile (android) paradigm: red markers are on their own row in the tl, dynamically reserving some space between messages. This is probably more acceptable but in a busy room with a steady read marker “waterfall” might be quite annoying and jumpy, which is to be avoided (could do so by reserving that space statically).
the element web threads paradigm: timestamp on the left. this makes a lot of sense since it uses a very similar layout.
